Giddy-Up, Hellicopter!
Making my frigid way over to Central Station Bar, I was hoping to catch a little bit of Giddy Up Helicopter, and upon entry found out that that they were already half way through their set. I bumped into a few people I knew there and luckily they knew me well enough to know that I was on a mission; which was to get a good listen and look at what was going down on the only stage in Orlando tiny enough to resemble some of my other friends’ apartments who now live near the real Central Station in NYC.
Reminiscent of the song structures evident throughout On Avery Island by Neutral Milk Hotel or Sonic Youth a la Goo, Experimental Jet Set Trash and No Star and better yet, Washing Machine, the five-piece did their thing - didn’t seem to bother anyone in Central Station - and no one seemed to bother them. Which was a shame, because amongst the sloppy (in a good way) and groove-a-luscious tail end of a set that I caught, a spark had been lit that I didn’t want to burn out.
If the sound, lighting and vibe was just all around better in that venue (hey the bar & bartenders rock but *sheesh!* put some kind of sound proof material between the stark walls and the kick ass art already!) then maybe everyone there would’ve been enraptured with the Tampa based gem as much as it seemed they should’ve been.
