I love some deep fried pickles, but the ones offered up at B.B. King's Blues Club last night as part of its VIP grand opening were some of the saltiest I've had in a while. I'm no food critic but the pickles, salad and chicken were something to be desired. But it was free so why am I bitching? Actually the ribs were mighty tasty and the collard greens were the best I'd ever had. Casey said it tasted like they added sugar, and noted the whole dinner could possibly kill the club's namesake if he had tried it (Mr. King has diabetes for those of you not in the know).
But after a beer and a couple of sips of a Lucille (the bar's namesake blue drink that tasted like it had rum, blue curacao and fruit juices) I was full and ready to see B.B. The stage is intimately set up in the center of the club and for those folks who were at the tables in front, they looked to be close enough to sit in B.B. King's lap. There is tons of seating throughout the club (really a restaurant) but they could stand to lose some of it, seriously ass-to-elbow in a lot of spots.
It would be cool if they cleared out some of the seating at night and utilized this as a music venue, there is definitely more than enough space, but for now I think it will be the house band that takes the stage as people eat their ribs. Speaking of taking the stage, when B.B. King did the crowd got crazy, I even got goosebumps being that close but I don't think B.B. was all that excited when he was getting feedback screeching out to the audience on the second song causing the sound guys to lower his volume and causing the audience in the back straining to hear the blues' legend.
After a few songs, Casey and I called it. One too many Lucille's and a meal that could feed two people a sleepy Kelly makes.
I'm curious if the club will bring more people to the ghost town that is Pointe Orlando, where BB King's is located. Only time will tell.
